Interior Design and Photography MH Studio – from the Holiday House Website

Last year, I met the ladies of MH Studio in NYC…they are super talent, and warm, and their studio itself is stunning with views of the Chrysler Building. This is the second project I have done for MH, and was thrilled to see the after shots of the space they designed for the Holiday House in NYC for the Susan G Koman Foundation. It’s also fun to see the after pictures to see what has has been changed from the spec.

Shari has also posted about their experience with the Holiday House on their blog…she says “it’s not for the faint of heart”

MH…Great job, it’s beautiful!

If you would like a rendering of your space BEFORE it’s built, like MH, then contact me for more info.

I love this city…I can’t get enough of it, and this trip was one of the best yet. Carol, an interior designer from the blog CREED and of Carol Reed Design, out of Toronto joined me for a week-long whirlwind trip to the city. We started with Kipps Bay, took in the work of renderer (or should I say artist) Jeremiah Goodman at the NYSID, had dinner with the wonderful Patricia, of PVE at Swizz…shared lunch at Carmines, dinner at Ruby Foos, saw “Promises, Promises” at the Broadway theatre.

We walked through the park, ate gelato…yes it was that warm…t-shirt weather, actually. We stopped by to see Francine at Interieurs…her showroom is so amazing! I met the wonderful women of MH Studio in NYC…they are doing beautiful work, and their office looks right at the Chrysler Building. I also had the pleasure of meeting new designer friends, Lisa, Doreena and Oregon designer, Barbara, once again. My husband showed up for the last night, and we went for a nice lunch and shopping at Macy’s, where I scored a Calvin Klein coat for 50% off…it truly is a wonderful life!

Since my to do list is longer than my unanswered emails, and Carol has now brought me into this Twitter world, which I can already see is going to consume even more of my time, I am going to share just SOME of the highlights of my trip, and get right to work.

NYC in 2 days...NYIGF

This trip to NYC had a couple of major screw ups…first, and I NEVER do this…I got a connecting flight. As you may have read in my profile, my hubby is a commercial pilot, and I am not inexperienced with these buses in the sky, so I am surprised I did it. It’s also the first time I took Delta…NEVER again on that one too!!  (I’m only linking to them, so they may find this complaint)

They left us one hour to make a connection, clear customs in the connecting city, grab our bags, drop them again, and make it to a new gate. We had to wait for 15 minutes in the hot plane…they couldn’t open the doors because the customs paperwork wasn’t faxed from Vancouver. With this flight leaving so early from Vancouver, customs wasn’t even open, so that’s the reason we had to clear customs in the connecting city, which was Minneapolis.

The most hilarious part of the whole thing was when we were all stressed, and talking to each other in the customs line about not making our flight (2 windows open for 200 passengers), the third of the customs agents comes out, and says “You might as well relax, because most of you are not going to make this flight…Delta knows that they need two hours for a connection, and it was too bad for us”. Great…Mr. Personality….and of course, you can’t say anything! Such A__ H____s these guys. How about, get behind one of those booths and try to do something to help the situation????

So, I (and another 100 people) missed the connecting flight, on a Saturday, in the middle of the country, when I only had two and a half days in NYC, and I was pissed to find out I had to wait five hours for the next one!!!! GRrrrrr.

I arrived in NYC at rush hour, finally got there late Saturday, and was so tired, I crashed big time. Every flight was packed full, and it was awful.

The city was, in fact marvellous, especially Saturday when I arrived, the weather being perfect, but the next day was so so humid, it felt like you were in a steam shower…that, was of course the two days where I NEEDED to look composed for some business I was taking care of in the city. My hair was like straw.

Looking forward to my next trip in January!!…can you tell I’m not a hot weather girl?

Thanks for letting my vent and rant….now onto the good stuff….

The Gift Show at Javitz Center/Piers was really huge, and really beautiful…a few things I loved….

Rustic boards, furniture, John Robshaw (of Wandrlust/Woodson and Rummerfields) bedding…loving colour!

Me and a Chicken foot stool/sculpture from The City Girl Farm in Lyons Kansas. Mom, Susan is and Interior Designer, and her two daughters Emily and Sally are both Architecture and Interior Architecture/Product design students. What a creative team. They were influenced by Francois-Xavier Lalanne’s sheep ottomans. Pendants, lighting, spheres and natural curiosities were abundant…this vingette was especially pretty…I forgot the source…if you know it, please email me.

CIMG2143 CIMG2117

Armand Diradourian Cashmere pieces were nothing short of pure loveliness…I wish I had touch-a-vision, because they feel like butter…small scale iconic furniture for the kids at Little Nest was so adorable!

CIMG2154CIMG2159

Oh, and I did some shopping as well…these great permanent pleat pants are from a textile design team in Austria called Yummy.

I bought the gold earrings at The New York Look on 5th Ave…they are my new favourites, but couldn’t find a website. You can see the polishing marks on the disks…I love that detail.

The neck piece is from db Sources Limited…they show at High Point, Dallas and NYC.

And, a new coach wallet/wristlet I can use inside a larger bag…I love the colour orange right now.

So, even know it was rushed, I had travel problems, and didn’t have time to contact anyone, I had a great time at the show, just wandering and asking questions… I feel inspired to think outside the box, and have some great new resources to share with my clients.

Best… Michelle

NYC in May…and the ICFF show

This weekend I was in NYC for some business, and pleasure. My husband wasn’t suppose to be there for the weekend, but ended up being in the city week before me with work. We stayed at the Carlton Hotel on 29th and Madison, designed by David Rockwell; a hotel that looked great on the website, but like many, the front desk service was poor. The beds were VERY uncomfortable, but it was well designed, and they did have a large bathroom with a bathtub. This time I spied the Library Hotel, close to Grand Central Station; I loved the location, and the building. I will check out for my next trip.

We did some shopping at some of my favourite shops…Talbots and Macy’s. I bought some new dresses, and my hubby was there to give me his thumbs up or down. Why do we care what they think? I don’t know. We spent some time in the Flatiron district, which I found very charming. There were these statues of men in bronze…one at the intersection square of the Flatiron building at ground level, and many more installed on the tops of buildings…it was fun to look up and spot them all over the neighbourhood.

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Javitz Center was great…I had never been, and want to shout out to all of the Vancouver companies exhibiting: Brent Comber, who I finally had a chance to meet, even know I have specified his reclaimed wood products many times. A side note with Mr. Combers work…Brian and I ate at Dos Cominos the night before, around the corner from the Carlton. Brent told me he worked with Yabu Pushelberg (a Toronto firm) to produce the lighting plan for this restaurant, as well as the other Dos Cominos in Las Vegas. Christian Woo was there, with his wood and lacquered pieces, as well as the Molo wall crew, who showed their cloud lanterns for the first time, in full configuration. They are known for their paper wall systems.

Amuneal from Philadelphia did this metal flower installation, which was 8’ high, each flower being 18”wide…stunning.

I found the show colourful, green, and innovative. Lets start with colour: the Corian colour selections were amazing, and so was the '’tube” you walk through to view their translucent samples. You can add imagery and texture, and play with the translucency and thickness of your design. You saw colour as you came down the escalator, but also noticed the push for responsible design. I talk about the triangle of green design often, which I feel, not only includes the product itself, but how it is manufactured and transported. There is still another corner to this (making it a square I would guess), and that is the lifetime of the product, and how often you will be replacing it over the years. Hastens mattresses are a great example of this. Here is me pushing this long needle through the mattress with the help of their master construction technician from Sweden. The innovation came in many forms…design schools showed amazing forward thinking design, there was a focus on  lighting technology, like LED and fibre optics that were dynamic, with touch and smart computerized technology. Walls, ceilings, floors and other surfaces that respond to us as users is quite innovative in my book.

CIMG2015 CIMG2016 CIMG2017 CIMG2018

That needle is pointed on both ends…ouch! I’m trying not to lose a finger, while hand stitching a Hastens mattress…as the master tech looks on, of course! They are made of organic cotton, wool and horsehair, which is curled first. Every one by hand.

Jackie from Jackie Blue Home

Jackie from Jackie Blue Home and I ran into each other at the show, and I met her daughter, Angelica, who is also going to school for Interior Design. She is as sweet as she sounds on her blog…we took a couple of pics, and I was off to meet my hubby. We ended up walking up 8th Ave., where there was a really large street fair, with music, food and shopping. I grabbed a cup of fresh watermelon chunks, and people watched for a half hour of so. This little girl was dancing in the street to the Spanish music vibe, with a smile from ear to ear, and a melting ice cream cone in her hand. That evening, my business coach, my husband and I had a wonderful meal at our favourite Italian antipasto bar, Figerellos across from Lincoln Center.

CIMG2032

The 8th Ave Street fair I came across walking from the Javitz Center and ICFF to the Lincoln Center neighbourhood…that’s people right to the end of the perspective…wow.

The next day, after my morning meeting, I went to see Francine Gardner for lunch, and to see her new showroom, Interieurs on E59th. She really is an amazing talent, and the showroom is now positioned on the same block as the D and D center, the A and D center and many showrooms to the trade. I visited a few, like B Berger and Ann Sacks. Interieurs has a wonderful back deck space, and a great line of outdoor furniture.

Cooper Hewlitt is undergoing a renovation, but I took time to see the Triennial Exhibit, featuring innovative and socially responsible design. It was small, but powerful…check out the website here. That day I must have walked a hundred blocks, but I couldn’t have asked for better weather…I’m so used to really hot days and humidity in NYC, that it was a relief, and made it possible for me to walk everywhere. I wish I was coming back in time to see the bamboo exhibit at the Met…that is going to be so cool!

The last night I spent at my husband’s airport hotel near JFK, and waited for a Cathay Pacific flight that was late leaving, and got me home at about 3am. yuk…the only sucky part of going to NYC.

So it’s been an action packed week…a couple of new rendering commissions, some good news on the publishing front (can’t wait to share), some very inspirational emails from students of ID who have discovered my blog,  and meeting some amazing blogger/designers during a whirlwind trip to the city.

I’ve had some inquires about my rendering videos…yes, the first one is coming soon! My apologies, as paid work takes priority at the moment. We are in the middle of voice-overs.…I hope to have it out soon.

Loro Piana

While at the design center in NYC, I fell in love with the fabrics at Loro Piana’s showroom. This morning I noticed they have an amazing clothing line for men and women…these are four of the amazing combinations…check out their website for the long history of the company, about the fine fabrics that go into these garments, and those they produce for interiors.
