Joy and Delight

 img140

An instructor once called it “Joy and Delight”, that feeling of euphoria, wonder and place. I haven’t watercoloured in a long time, but this image inspires me to soak and staple the paper to the board. We will see what happens.

Meanwhile, I’d like to introduce you to my new blogger friend Stephen Gardner at Sketch of the Day…amazing drawing inspiration…you really won’t believe it!

Wow, his work is really impressive. I wonder if he really creates a new sketch every day....

You should get out your watercolours and create some paintings to show us :-)

Grreat picture Michelle. I love the Moorish arches. And great sketching site. Question: have you not been doing watercolours on your wonderful renderings?

Hi Patricia,

Since my training is in arch. type renderings, I learned with paint pens, fine liner pens, pantone and trias on rag paper, in a style that works for communication of ideas. But I use all kinds of mediums to layer on top, like chalk and pencil crayons. I like the vibrancy they all bring to the rendering.

Watercolour is something I dabble in, mostly on trips to add dimension to my sketches. It tends to have less chroma...in a nice way. I like the "mood" it provokes...more illustrational.

I put the sketch on watercolour paper yesterday, and am excited to try to bring more vibrancy to the w.colour by using it on dry paper, with a strong mix of colour on the brush.

It's the journey, as they say, not the destination. It's just fun to experiment. If you worry too much about making a mistake, you won't learn from them.

I do find, however, you learn more about COLOUR using acrylics, oils and watercolour, since you can play with hue, chroma, saturation, etc...

Boy, that was a book. A little off topic as well...aren't you glad you asked?

Best,
Michelle
