The Little Kitchen that Could

CIMG8173

What would you do with this kitchen if you were a young single man? My client is wondering about the value of a new kitchen and wants to paint these cabinets…my solution would be to concentrate on great lowers and use industrial supports for open upper shelving in the same wood.  Add 12x24 floor tiles, a new SS fridge and stove and replace the bulkheads with a conduit for that industrial chic look. Isn’t there just a point in the life of cabinets, when paint doesn’t quite do it?

Next on my list would be the window and great lighting.

Recalling my young single man days: Boarding up the kitchen (except for the sink and beer fridge) would be the best choice. Also from my single man days I certainly didn't have anything I'd want to display on shelves. As a not young married man, I like your proposal, particularly dumping the cabinets over the bar thing: the worst element in the current kitchen. Save the scroll brackets for something else. What color is the range - I don't understand.

I love the idea of the open industrial shelving. If you love to cook, you can have everything easily accessible, and if you can't cook, you can create a beautiful display.

I absolutely agree - a little paint ain't gonna help this situation! A little investment in a kitchen goes a LONG way!

I like very much what you have done with opening up the space and taking out the upper cabinets. You know how I enjoy your renderings...great job.

I think he needs to start over. And, yes, concentrate on the lowers. For some reason, I'm inclined to see them sprayed with black lacquer, but I might just be having a moment.

Anyway, great ideas!

I love your ideas. Adding a little industrial feeling to this kitchen would definitely update this kitchen.

I so agree with the open shelving. I have always had it my kitchen. Terry as a male who has gone through ages and stages of maledom has valid comments, however. I am almost 60 but love industrial. When I gut my kitchen, it's going to be all open shelves and I'm using Whirlpool gladiator tool drawers for cabinets. My neighbor thinks I am nuts. I tell him if the next person doesn't like it, they can just roll out the cabinets and start over!

Great sketch, Michelle. I agree that the cabs and soffit over the peninsula need to go. I'd also remove the uppers on the window wall. However, I would leave the uppers on the oven/fridge wall so your young man client wouldn't have to stress over being so organized! How about frosted glass panels in dark wood with industrial-looking stainless or brushed nickle pulls? And I second Terry's idea to salvage those bar brackets for another project!

Love your take on the kitchen, makes it so much more open. I'd have to go with the black and SS as well, seems very manly!
